5 uses of AI in construction

Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a trending tool used to simplify and automate processes in different business sectors. One of them is the construction industry.

The advances of this technology have made it possible to accelerate and improve the work of professionals dedicated to the design, development and supervision of works, offering generic options instantly adapted to the needs of the project, in addition to analyzing data to prevent failures in both the structure as in the budget cost.

Artificial Intelligence, designed to imitate the cognitive functions of a human being, offers the ability to store large amounts of information, process it quickly and in a matter of seconds return exact data that would normally take a person hours or days to deduce.

In the construction sector, various processes are used, involving the use of human rational capacity, which can be replaced by this type of technology, and although in Mexico its implementation in this field is still limited, it is expected to take off in a near future.

It is expected that in the coming years many employers will make substantial changes with technological tools that can improve process techniques; while Artificial Intelligence has increased its use very quickly throughout the world.

A statistic from the Institute of Management Development in 2021 indicated that Mexico was in 56th place out of 64 countries in digital competitiveness. In 2022 the country rose to 55th place and in 2023 it fell one place to be in 56th place again.

But, what specific uses can this technology be given in the construction field?

Here we tell you five ways in which Artificial Intelligence can be applied in the development and execution of projects:

  1. Architectural design

The ability of this technology to generate ideas in seconds can become a support tool for the design of construction projects, accelerating the creative process of the professional in charge of this area.

Artificial Intelligence can emulate certain style trends and combine environments with the appropriate conditions to generically create building suggestions that the architect can use according to them needs.

AI is capable of analyzing large amounts of data and providing useful options for decision-making in the design of a construction, but in the end, human intervention will be required in the process of creating the plans and soil studies where it will be built.

2. Accelerate planning time

One of the great advantages of AI is the ability to accumulate data and process it efficiently at high speed, which can help in decision making in project planning.

Intelligent software can manage the schedule of project activities by assigning tasks based on the availability of workers, shortening the time required for this task.

Currently, the computing architecture meets the needs that had been detected 20 years ago, making it possible to develop advanced models to make decisions based on data, images or statistics.

3. Budget calculation

Various applications can be developed with Artificial Intelligence intended to support different tasks, including budget calculation.

A program can analyze a virtual model of the work to be built and plan the amount of materials, machinery and workers required for its process.

Avoiding errors when defining the costs of the work can be very useful to avoid exceeding the assigned budgets and specialized software with the learning of data in the field of finance can be very useful to avoid generating losses or cost overruns.

4. Security risk detection

The use of this technology can also be implemented to prevent physical risks to construction workers.

There is software capable of analyzing images of the workplace and detecting the main risk areas where safety measures can be improved and the risk of accidents reduced.

The same programs can detect whether the equipment used by workers meets the appropriate protection requirements for the development of their functions.

Although there are specialized people to detect these risks, digital tools can serve as a great support so as not to overlook any potential danger.

5. Failure prevention

AI’s ability to collect data and automate processes allows it to explore thousands of possibilities to choose the safest design and project plan, helping to prevent inconveniences or delays caused by human error.

Intelligent software can optimize material, human and financial resources to achieve the best possible results, reducing the margin of error in your processes.

With the collaboration of José Mireles, doctor in robotics and sensor development and director of the Artificial Intelligence Center of the State of Chihuahua (IA Center) for this article, we can conclude that the development of these technologies came to revolutionize various sectors of the industry globally.

Mexico has the potential to generate Artificial Intelligence tools capable of developing construction and architecture projects in the future, or at least training people who can handle them.

At Global Engineering Group (GEG) we are at the forefront to continue offering the best service in the construction field.
